DESCRIPTION: French, Napoleon III, ormolu musical and automaton novelty mantel clock, in the form of a castle, time and bell strike with silk thread suspension, c.1870, less dome, two "trains" with early style locomotives and cars traveling across the front on two bands, driven by an independent spring barrel, the plinth also housing a musical movement
CONDITION: overall very good original condition. This clock is from an Antiquorum auction, and also nearly identical to one sold at Christies, lot 50 in sale 1533, for $18000. Overall ht 26" (20" wide). Also see this type clock described by Arthur W.J.G. Ord-Hume, The Musical Clock, Mayfield Books, Mayfield, 1995, p.191, plate IX/28. Note also semaphore /signal that moves on the right tower.
